Dismal Mountain
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Minotaur (July, 2001)
Author: John Billheimer
Average review score:

A fascinating read
The Mountain View Development Company began leveling Dismal Mountain, West Virginia in order to construct a mall. The firm bought out most residents but elderly Lizzie Neal refused to leave because this was the home of her ancestors and her parents were buried nearby. When the company sends trucks down from the mountaintop, an incident finally occurs. Lizzie's nephew Bobby Ray killed the driver who he swears fired at him first. Lizzie sets up the scene so it would seem she shot the driver.

Lizzie's nephew, transportation inspection consultant Owen Allison, comes home to visit his ailing mother and to help Lizzie. While Owen's mother recovers from cancer surgery, Sheriff Thad Reader explains to him that Lizzie's confession of being responsible appears phony. He asks Owen to try to learn the truth. As he makes some inquiries, Owen begins to uncover a dark conspiracy to fund the Dismal Mountain Project, which places his life in danger.

DISMAL MOUNTAIN is an exciting and relevant Owen Allison mystery that highlights the environmental versus economy issue. The story line is entertaining due to the strong secondary characters that help bring West Virginia alive while providing depth to Owen through his family members and his former college sweetheart. John Billheimer makes mystery reading fun (see HIGHWAY ROBBERY and THE CONTRARY BLUES for additional pleasure).

A Doctor's Book on Smoking and How to Quit
Published in Paperback by NTC/Contemporary Publishing (May, 1978)
Author: Anthony Owen. Colby
Average review score:

This book really did save my life
I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone who seriously wants to quit smoking. I was an addicted smoker for 35 years and have been smoke-free for 16. I know I will never smoke again.

Dr. Colby's book is a 14-day plan using self-hypnosis. I used this book, plus behavior modification techniques that I knew of (rewarding myself, etc.) and was very successful.

I wish this book would be printed and more available again, as it's literally a life saver. I had never used self-hypnosis before, but was it effective. Please get the book for yourself or anyone who wants to quit. I have bought it (after much searching) for friends, who also were able to quit. What a book!!

Down & Up Fall, The
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (September, 1996)
Authors: Johanna Hurwitz and Gail Owens
Average review score:

The Down and Up Fall
The book I read is called The Down and Up Fall By Johanna Hurwitz. It's mostly about a girl named Boliva who lives whith her Aunt and uncle. She already has two friends named Deek and Rory. During the book she meets a new friend named De De. After Bolivia finds kittens, De De brings over one of her friends woh is crazy about animals. His name is Aldo. Of course Derek and Rory don't like her two new friends so they act mean to them. Read to see how these kids end up. I enjoyed reading this book because it has pets in it and also because it's an interesting book to read. I think other kids around 10 years old would like this book.

The Egg's Bible
This is the book for those involved with the egg business. The authors use a clear an easy language whithout losing the aim of a good value technical and scientific information. It's a good and quick reference for those in production, processing and industry of egg products as well for the consumers of such products. I've been using this book by a long time (back editions) and it never left my desktop, as a good refecence in day by day uses. A good choice for the beggniners at the egg processing. El azogue y la granada : Gilberto Owen en su discurso amoroso
Published in Unknown Binding by Universidad Nacional Autâonoma de Mâexico, Coordinaciâon de Humanidades, Direcciâon General de Publicaciones ()
Author: Vicente Quirarte
Average review score:

Empirical Likelihood
Published in Paperback by Chapman & Hall (18 May, 2001)
Author: Art B. Owen
Average review score:

Destined to be a classic
This book will make accessible to a wider audience the new and important area of nonparameteric likelihood and hypothesis testing. It is written by a pioneer in this area. The ideas in this book are very sophisticated but one has no difficulty following the arguments because the writing is crystal clear; the author must have put in a lot of thought into the organization and presentation of the ideas. The book lucidly discusses the statistical theory and -- perhaps more importantly for the practitioner -- computational details and practical aspects of putting the ideas to work with real data. I expect that this book will have a major impact on the way hypothesis testing is done in econometrics and other areas of applied statistics, where one is very often unsure about what the correct model specification is and cannot rely on certain large sample approximations. A terrific book. I would recommend it very highly to practitioners in areas where hypothesis testing is too important to be left to less correct approaches (I am thinking of areas like biostatistics, quality control, econometrics, but I expect there are many such areas).

Emu in Perspective

Authors: Deborah Owen, Peter Cole, and Leon Brittan
Average review score:

The Best Book Available on the Monetary Union of Europe
This book is an absolute must reading for those who are interested in gaining an indept understanding the Monetary Alliance between a broad spread of countries. The book is written in easy to understand terms where each country is discussed separately. I must say I was a little worried it would be over my head but was delightfully refreshed to find out it was an easy read. This is MUST read for anyone in the financial community.

Eric Owen Moss: Recent Works (Planet Architecture)
Published in CD-ROM by in-D (15 June, 2000)
Authors: in-D, Dana Hutt, and Tim Sakamoto
Average review score:

I rate this an A+.
This is an excellent volume on Eric Own Moss, one of the preeminent contemporary architects in the U.S. The inherently multiformat medium of CD-ROM are generally vastly underutilised but not so with this disk. The combination of persentational methods are here well integrated for an extremely comprehensive overview of several of Moss' projects. The 3D panoramas are quite effective and the plans overlayed with photographs give a wonderful feel for the views afforded within the complex forms created by Moss. This is what I would like to see more architecture books and media doing but unfortunately somehow publishers lack the vision to do so. I've been quite impressed with the Planet Architecture Series and look forward to more titles in the future. One last note - It seems that the interview with Eric Owen Moss was conducted with a special attention to clarity and non-technical terminology. The video is easily navigated and delves deeply into a complex architectural practice without becoming tiresome or overly-pretentious. I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in cutting edge architecture.

Escoffier: King of Chefs
Published in Paperback by Broadway Play Pub (June, 1983)
Author: Owen S Rackleff
Average review score:

An Evening with Mr. Rackleff
Escoffier: King of Chefs by Owen S.Rackleff is a lively, mouth-watering and extremely theatrical one-man play. Especially vivid are the many celebrities Escoffier cooked for, including Britain's King Edward VII, the opera diva Nellie Melba (source of his recipie for Peach Melba), Kaiser Wilhelm, for whom Escoffier steamed a great salmon, and many others of the sparkling Edwardian Era. Most memorable, however, is the ghostly presence of Escoffier's long-time partner, the famous hotelier Cesar Ritz-who actually lost his mind when all the preparations for Edward's coronation (1902) had to be cancelled (or rather postponed) due to the new king's appendicitis. As acted by the author, in dozens of performances (debuting NYC 1981), EKC remains a true "tour de force" (as NY's Daily News reported) for any bravura actor; a humourous insight into gourmand living, a touching, even tragic story of two creative men and a compendium of classic recipies, from "Nymph's Thighs"(Frog's Legs) to Melba Toast(invented by Ritz for the portly diva). EKC is, in short, a great read and a marvelous evening in the theatre. ghnova@hotmail.com
